Mission
The mission of The Calaboose African American History Museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret the history of African Americans in the city of San Marcos, Texas and Hays County.
General Responsibilities
The Calaboose African American History Museum is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors, who actively serve the Hays County community by opening and performing docent duty at the Calaboose Museum every Saturday. Board members work together to produce appropriate programming for the community, adults and children; manage the Calaboose Museum's finances; conduct fundraising activities and apply for grants; host events; recruit, hire and manage professional staff as necessary; maintain the physical facilities of the Museum and annexed Cephas House; acquire and maintain the artifacts and collections; curate exhibitions; liaison with the City of San Marcos; and recruit and manage volunteer docents.
Service Terms
Board member leadership requires an unselfish commitment to 3-year terms, with no more than 2 consecutive terms at a time, attendance at regular monthly meetings and payment of annual dues.

Prospective Board Member Application
The Calaboose African American History Museum (CAAHM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit museum in San Marcos, Texas. CAAHM was founded in 1997 by Mrs. Johnnie Armstead to collect, preserve, and interpret authentic African American artifacts related to San Marcos and Hays County history. The purpose of the organization is to inform and educate all citizens about the many accomplishments, contributions and experiences of African Americans in San Marcos and Hays County.
